There is a really interesting take on conferences at http://www.redhat.com/magazine/022aug06/features/barcamp/. This is truly a conference that is for the people, by the people.
After preliminary work . . . "the organizers divided the available rooms into mini-classrooms, some large and some small. They created a map and a big, blank schedule."
Might be tough to get state funding to attend something like this, but what a great idea!
